Round 11, 2016 Chinese Super League
Tianhe Sports Centre, Guangzhou
19:35 (GMT/UTC+8), 29th May 2016
The defending champions of the Chinese Super League started the game strongly to siege the visitors and created several chances. The MVP of last year Ricardo Goulart caught the ball outside the 12-yard box just one minute after the whistle, but his strike went above the crossbar. Only three minutes later, a foul from Sun Xiang gave away a free-kick to the host. The set-piece from Rong Hao found Alan who headed the ball towards Paulinho, yet the header from the latter was punched away by Yan Junling.
Scolari’s side almost found the opener in the next couple of minutes but the efforts from Alan and Yu Hanchao were both denied by the goalkeeper. In the 15th minute, however, a mistake from home team gave away a chance to Wu Lei, but his strike was blocked away by the defender.
Shanghai SIPG had a few chances midway through the first half as Wu Lei collected the through pass from Li Wenhao in the 27th minute, which forced Zeng Cheng to rush out and intercept the ball outside the area. The clearance took a deflection from Zhang Linpeng and went out for a corner. Again, the headed clearance from Gao Lin took a deflection from his teammate and somehow intercepted by Evrard, who took the shot immediately but only to be kept away by Zeng Cheng with his chest.
Scolari’s men responded with several strikes in the next 15 minutes. On 35 minutes, Alan picked up a back heel pass from Paulinho, but the shot afterwards was rejected by Shi Ke, and the follow-up attempt from Goulart was again blocked away by the defenders. Zhang Linpeng made a long range effort three minutes later but the ball went off the target.
Both teams had their opportunities to change the scoreline in the last 5 minutes of the first half, but the headers from both Evrard and Yu Hanchao came inches away from the goal.
The game restarted after a goalless first half, with Guangzhou continued their siege to the visitors, while Shanghai seemed to play more defensively.
Their siege finally paid off on 64 minutes, when Gao Lin picked up the throw-in from Zhang Linpeng, flipped the ball into the air and Goulart, who came to the scene, sent the ball into the far corner and gave Guangzhou the lead.
There was another chance for Scolari’s side to double their advantage yet the shot from Paulinho was denied by Yan Junling.
Only 5 minutes later, however, Eriksson’s team responded with an equalizer when Evrard dribbled through the defense and with only the goalkeeper to beat, he volleyed the ball into the down left corner of the goal.
Players from Guangzhou were eager to lead the game again, but both Zhang Linpeng’s long-distances strike and Alan’s header went over the bar, while the free-kick from Huang Bowen in the 79th minute was caught by the keeper.
Both teams came close to change the result of the game in the last few minutes. The visiting side launched a counter attack in the 90th minute of the game, but the shot from unmarked Lin Chuangyi went straight to the stand. Paulinho immediately responded with a header inside the six-yard box, but his effort could not have the goalkeeper beaten. The game ended with a 1-1 tie between the two sides.
